Before buying him a gadget

A few checks can save a disappointing unboxing.

Check compatibility

Read the listing for supported devices, ports and operating systems. A matching connector alone does not guarantee all features work.

Read the practical details

Look at charging requirements, dimensions and included accessories. Consider how and where he will use it.

Check the seller and returns

Review the current listing, seller information and return conditions before buying. Product choices, prices and availability can change.

Write a compatibility note before opening listings

Record the actual device model, the available connections and the intended job. ‘A stand for video calls at the kitchen table’ is more useful than ‘something techy’. A powered accessory adds questions about adapters, supplied cables and where it will plug in. Compare the complete setup with the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume a photograph includes every cable or that an identical-looking port supports the same functions.

Think about the person who will maintain it. Does the accessory require an app, account, subscription, replacement filters or regular charging? Read the current requirements and ask whether they want those commitments. A present can become an unwanted task when the interesting part is choosing it and the dull part is left to the recipient.

Plan a sensible handover

Keep the receipt, instructions and original packaging together. Avoid activating accounts or linking the gadget to your own profile as part of a surprise. A useful gift note can explain the intended task and where you found the compatibility information. If you cannot establish a key requirement, choose a less dependent accessory or ask the recipient rather than treating the purchase as an experiment they must finish.
